I believe MPs are first and foremost soldiers. They can be assigned any task a soldier might be assigned. While they are most likely going to be assigned tasks that are best handled by MPs, they can be assigned any task a soldier might be assigned. They may not spend their entire career as an MP. I...

Military Police, to my knowledge, have the primary duty of supporting military operations both domestically and abroad. While they may engage in typical police duties, they substantially engage in operations such as convoys, rear area security, traffic control in combat areas, securing high value assets,...

As was mentioned, look at the total package. That additional information is significant. Higher top pay is very relevant.

How long does it take to break even?

If department a gets to top pay quickly, that also is a factor. You could spend more years at top pay even if top.pay...

Whether that is $10 an hour or $10 less per hour, both should be a red flag. Unless you are willing to be paid dramatically less, take the better paying job. You can ask for more money, and will likely be told no. Even if they agree to pay you more, it is very unlikely to make up the difference. ...

  • It was possible at my former agency to monitor every officer who viewed the computerized incident report, and to block access to the report.

  • The more serious the case, the more effort will be put in distancing the officer with the personal interest from the case. This could go as far as moving the investigation to a location that the officer with a personal interest would not have access. Details of the investigation would not be shared...

  • As a detective, I focused on what actions would most likely lead to a suspect identification or apprehension. I may have interviewed witnesses, or left the scene to make a photo lineup. Homicide detectives generally responded as teams, but as a robbery detective it was usually just me. Homicide was...

  • Where I worked it was the first officer on the scene until either a sergeant, or a more capable officer, arrived on the scene. If a rookie was the first on a major scene, he would generally relinquish control to a more experienced officer even if that was not a sergeant. This would be on major scenes,...

Unless it is amazingly well done list, lists may present issues. You are very likely better off going to department websites and plugging in your specific information.

I will use Charlotte as an example. Base starting pay is 45 to 46k. If you have a 2 year degree it is 5% more, and a 4...

  • Find a new career. I would not want to work with you. In fact I would be scared to work with you. In all bluntness, you earned a degree but never resolved your internal issues with using force.

Corrections is not an alternative. The need to use force exists for them also.

  • I strongly suggest looking for a different career. Staying in the military may be a good option. There is always a chance you will be able to explain the story and be believed, but it will be a huge challenge. The military experience may help, but I would have a problem hiring you if it was up to me....
