    Joseph Wambaugh's Lines and Shadows that is. I'd completely forgotten about that book until I saw the title here. I read it in the 80's and the issues are all over the news right now....

  • Makes me realise just how densely populated England is. The county I police is also around 600 square miles but has 1.2 million inhabitants - and we don't even have any major cities. We frequently run out of officers to attend calls on week-end nights; our neighbouring force was in the news last week...

  • Dr Martens shoes. They are hard-wearing and practical, shine up OK and you can run in them. You can also get them in steel toe cap - kick someone in the knee, you don't have to do any of that undignified wrestling on the ground. Which works well at work too.

    Our help and support for MH is pretty good and colleagues are genuinely understanding when an officer, as we say round here, "goes wibble" (suffers a breakdown or can't cope). Regular screening is restricted to certain roles - such as those that necessitate access to indecent images of children...
