  • If your dsired career is in law enforcement, why are you getting a degree in social work? The absolute last thing the profession needs is more people who want to be social workers instead of law enforcement officers,

  • The fact that you have multiple degrees and are working at a high schooler's job might be a problem. Why aren't you working in your degree field?

Falling asleep at work may be a red flag. Police work demands you being awake and alert throughout every shift. That includes after working 12...

It depends on the department. My agency generally did not have "pay jobs". The few available were at the county fair, special events held at the fairgrounds where alcohol was served (quinceaneras, mostly) and a smattering of festivals at county parks. The business (the fair board or event...

Check craigslist or a used sporting goods store for a pair of spinlock dumbbell handles and a stack of standard plates (1" hole) in 5, 10 and 2-1/2 pounds. It's not as quick to change weights but they can be found a lot cheaper than Powerblocks or similar.

Make sure your study habits are up to par. There will be a lot of classroom time, homework, papers to write and written tests. If you haven't been in college, it would behoove you to hold off on the academy and go to a few semesters at your community college.

    Make sure your attitude is...

  • I responded to a nighttime crash on the freeway where a 4x4 rolled while swerving to avoid a deer. Deer are common around there, and it's not unusual for them to get hit. The driver wound up parapalegic from the crash. Had he just struck the deer, his truck would have had a few hundred worth of dam...

I only booked if there was no way to identify the violator. Otherwise, cite and tow the car. The DA treated first-offense unlicensed driving as a fix-it ticket. They would file the case and then continue it. If the defendant returned at the next court date with a DL, they dismissed.

    The...

There is no authority for law enforcement to tow for no insurance. Only a judge can order an impound for that. If you're going to enforce the Vehicle Code, make sure you and your agency have been through CA POST-approved training. You are opening yourself and your department to civil and possible criminal...

The section that applies here is most likely 242 USC 1983.

In almost 29 years, I never lost a knife, flashlight or pen. The only thing I lost was a baton that I left in a patrol car at the end of the week, and never saw again. Hopefully the d-bag who kiped it was one of several probies who washed out right around then....

  • I was wondering the same thing. MPDC is scraping the bottom of the barrel. Are they really that desperate that they're hiring a dude who's a repeat alcohol violator, a crappy driver and a thief? Or is their background investigator lazy AF?...

My county actually had quite a variety. The last patrol beat I worked had beaches, large farms, dense urban, suburban and remote mountains. You could go from be on your own at a domestic up some dirt road with cover 20 minutes out, to taking an ag chemical theft report at a mega-farm to a gang shooting...

Hmmm. Those dumbass country rubes usually have exceptional skills at talking with people to get cooperation, handling investigations start to finish on their own, single-officer tactics for high risk stops, building clearing, arrests, and more. Even in my small county, there are places that we could...

There was no reason for the blood draw. The victim was not suspected of DUI, so that angle is out. Second, the DOT blood draw requirement puts the responsibility for the blood draw on the driver's employer, not on law enforcement. There are also exceptions, such as if the patient is unconscious. On...

  • You're not going to be taking FSTs unless there is something besides your drivng itself to make the officer think you could be under the influence. In any event, no officer is going to give FSTs with flashing lights facing the driver.
