  • But the gangbangers, hookers, pimps and drunk panhandlers are a good fit? And that is what I saw at one gas station each of the last two times I went through that pit....

I wouldn’t put anything on the floorboard. One drunk pisses all over the back seat and it sloshes forward and you’ll be buying replacements for the bag and everything in it.

I used a cheap canvas duffelbag from a surplus store, and kept it in the trunk. It held up for 15 years with...

    replied to Pushups
Every other day do as many pushups as you can, for three sets. Once a week, do that two or three times, spaced throughout the day (3 x max x 3). Pushups are very low impact and recovery time is fast.

You also need to be doing pullups and running. If the academy that you might wind up in...

    Rookies as detectives.
Detectives taking point on a SWAT entry.
A dozen officers milling around the front desk at HQ, mostly doing nothing.
A village of 900 people having 20 or 30 officers, again mostly goofing off at the station.
A sheriff can’t be fired by the mayor. The...

    replied to Acceptable commutes
For most of my career, I had a six-mile drive to work. Going in at 6:00 AM for days, it took about eight minutes. Going home at 5:00 took 35-40 minutes to drive. Riding a motorcycle cut it to 20 minutes, as lanesplitting is legal in California. (And socially acceptable, as well as expected by most drivers....

I worked 4/10s. We had two patrol teamsn one worked Sunday - Tuesday and alternating Wednesdays. The other worked the remaining Wednesdays and Thursday - Saturday. Everyone other than patrol worked Monday - Friday 8 - 5.

These days I am on a seven-day rotation - every day is Saturday....

Stay with CHP. The 8s will go away. You can go anywhere in the state and get paid the same, you can ride or fly, you don’t have to deal with DVs (that is a gigantic plus), you don’t have to root through tweaker pads and deal with their filth, you can transfer to a resident post or a small office...

    replied to Resume Tips
Law enforcement agencies don’t take resumes. Hiring for government jobs generally involves fill-in-the-blank and check-the-box forms. Many agencies will specifically state to not attach a resume. Your work and education history will go on the job application and on the background investigation forms....

A private eye with no experience is most likely just going to sit in a car all day waiting to get video of some guy on worker’s comp cutting firewood.

  • It’s a friendly rivalry where I worked. Until the mid 90s, our SO didn’t have substations, so we did a lot of our report writing in fire stations. I’ve had coffee and eaten quite a few meals at firehouses...man, can some of those guys cook! We always worked very well with fire, and I never saw...

replied to Free Background/Criminal Record Search
Booking photos posted online are a fairly recent phenomenon. Arrests prior to about 10 years ago won’t be online. Plus, consider how many local, county, state, special district, and federal agencies there are. Then consider that many of them have a minimal web presence. Hell, there are a number of...

  • Are you kidding? You’re an LEO and waited 2-1/2 years to handle a ticket? You also appear to not know how the judicial system works. If you’re an LEO, you should’ve been to traffic court by now and know what the judge is not impressed with. Hint - your driving record is meaningless. When you issue...

  • I was never able to envision any kind of emergency happening to me off duty where I’d armor up. If there is time to put on a vest, there is time to skedaddle. If shots need to be fired, I’m not waiting until I can dig out the armor and put it on.

  • There should be a label on the armor panels themselves, inside the carrier. That will have the production date, and then you can research to see what material Second Chance was using at that time.

I remember when the Zylon debacle was happening. I learned about it on another forum. A knife...
