There are MANY department in Texas with their own peace officer academies. Don't just concentrate on the major name cities, and don't forget county law enforcement. Many sheriff's departments may start officers out in the jail, but I wouldn't doubt there are others with just a LE career path. ...

I knew an officer who would remove his weapon from his holster while in the station’s bathroom stall and hang it on the door hook. I don’t know how, but it fired and then fired again while on the hook. I wasn’t with the department at the time, but I saw the damage. Also, I don’t know his...

Old thread, but for those still looking for similar information for whatever reason, our call sign is our ID number in the small department I’m currently in. I have a 3 digit number I use to identify myself on the radio and in reports.
in my former department, we were assigned a call...

For most of my career, we were solo, but there were times we went full crew. The partner who liked the radios up too loud bothered me. Personally, I liked being solo, so a partner bothered me just having a partner. I liked to listen to my Christian and talk radio the entire shift, and I can't do...

I've had lockers available to me in both of my departments, and I've rarely used them, especially like I see in the movies/TV shows. Years ago, I kept my old policy manual in it, but since I always dressed at home, there were never any clothing items in it. I have a lockable cabinet area for me right...

I used to ride police motorcycles for funeral escorts as a part time AND I was bike patrol…Oh AND I was heavily contemplating being in our traffic unit which rides H-Ds. Because of that, I’M the expert here….
I wrestled for a while with my decision going out for traffic, but ultimately...

The term used by prisoners at the jails in the area I used to work was "chief," and the they use "boss" here where I am now. I've never known incarcerated persons refer to their facility's staff as "police." "Officer" is also common, but just not "police"...

Here in Texas, basically, a felon's firearms ban ends 5 years after prison or probation. However, I think they can still be popped federally. We never ever see the Feds here in our area, but we know we can refer cases to them if we REALLY want a person popped for something they need to be popped ...

I just worked a 4th of July parade, but it had about 100 people total. The major events I've worked have been college bowl games and major concerts, and I'm happy I don't work those anymore. US society has become less respectful of LE authority over time. But for the most part, the crowds behaved...

Personally, "shield" doesn't come to mind when I think of the shiny object denoting authority on an officer's uniform. To me, it has always been called a "badge." I know people call them that, but I mostly hear it in TV shows and movies. This is also neither here nor there, but...

Yep, officers clearing buildings and felony traffic stops are very common reasons officer have to draw their duty weapon. Also, I've never fired any of my weapons at people, but I regularly kill animals due to vehicle strikes.
I've shared this before, but here it goes again: Years ago,...

The thing about police officers/peace officers is that we/they are troops. Many, if not all, have marching orders from above which direct to take certain actions or inactions due to someone's whim. If these officers were sent out to freely enforce the laws entrusted to them and to serve the public,...

Congratulations, and more power to you! Our department is running on a skeleton crew right now, but if we ever got up to full ranks, we'd have some SROs posted in our schools. A neighboring department, due to the Uvalde shooting, needed an SRO officer ASAP for their small school district, and they...
