  • I wish my FTO shared that view. My department has an MOU with highway patrol to take them. CHP needs to justify the fact that they have about double the officers necessary to patrol this county I guess.

We are arresting them for DUI but typically we will do turnovers unless CHP isn’t...

  • I work for a medium sized SO by Sac county. My county has an MOU with CHP to turnover all DUIs, accidents and general highway stuff. The majority of our county is unincorporated and that’s where the population lives so we are kept quite busy without doing highway stuff.

    My agency has...

  • Because we have to use specific verbiage when giving instructions..... One wrong word and it can have the entire case thrown out. I was never trained to do FSTs in the academy or during my first three phases of FTO since I was day shift nor is this even our primary responsibility as an agency.......

    Video/Manual for conducting SFSTs?

My new FTO has been pushing me to do at least one perfect SFST. We are an SO, so we typically do turnovers to CHP(Highway Patrol). I’ve done two so far and I royally bungled both.

My department doesn’t have a manual or video to do FSTs so I’m trying to find videos or some type manual...

It’s a time thing. Straight out of college I tried getting hired in LE with no dice. I got a professional job as an IT analyst for a software company, worked that gig for about a year, applied again and I’ve been a Deputy Sheriff for about 5 months now. Don’t sweat it. You’ll get there....

  • Congratulations! Start working out even if you are in shape and get a head start by memorising some of the common penal codes in your state such as petty theft, burglary, vandalism, etc.

Also, your academy will feel like high school in some aspects. Don’t get involved in cadet drama....

  • Well I’ve been here almost 4 months and I’ve yet to have a single meeting with the training sergeant or any other supervisor so I’m guessing that’s a good thing.

The vibe I get from my department is that they genuinely want trainees to succeed. Especially since they recently extended...

  • I work for a SO. If your BI signed off that means it goes up the chain of command. Meaning the hiring Sgt, LT, Capt, Undersheriff, and possibly the sheriff himself will approve your packet. You don’t have the job yet but things are moving along. Do you know if/when you’re going to interview with...

  • I started driving third week. Our FTO is 6 months as well. I didn’t see many notes. I’m just thinking it’s because my 3rd phase was night shift and I went from driving an explorer to an expedition. Not a huge shift but there’s a noticeable difference in handling....

    Extreme discrepancies between FTOs?

I just finished another phase of FTO and I’m a little worried about the discrepancies between my 3 FTOs. For example, my first 2 FTOs gave me passing scores for driving while my 3rd FTO has consistently given me 1s and 2s. My driving did not change at all between phases afaik.

    Another...

  • Rofl I believe my sergeant already has those. Most sergeants afaik spend the majority of the shift in office whether by choice or because of policy/paper work....

  • Just because he is not your direct supervisor does not mean he still isn’t your supervisor.

Telling a supervisor to eff off is not ok at any jobs.

Feel free to talk to a union rep but you just admitted to being insubordinate so I’m unsure as to how you’d contest that...

The candidate that that got their AA while serving a term in the military would be a decent choice as well....

Nice. Just be careful you don’t violate ITAR. Most weapon accessories are controlled goods that you can’t bring out of the country with a permit. I just don’t want customs jamming you up.

  • Well 2 weeks of night shift is done. I don’t know if it’s just the adrenaline but I haven’t had too much difficulty staying awake. I’ve also been doing lots of t stops to pass the time so maybe that’s why too. The melatonin and sleep masks like some of you suggested has helped immensely as well....
