Friendly piece of advice from one rook to another:

When you have a question, it’s best to ask your supervisor or senior officers/FTP first as they will be the ones who will more than likely have your answer while keeping you within agency policy and within the scope of Law.

  • My rule of thumb? To use the least amount of force to control a situation. In some cases (which this officer may have been angling at), sternly asking someone “are you saying you want to fight me” is a show of force and may have the subject rethink their choices and stand down.

    If I...

Half of it is what you make of it and keeping your expectations in check.

I love the agency I was hired by; others both older and younger than me hate it. Some love the hours, hate the management, love the training etc etc.

Each agency is going to have pros and cons, you need...

Congrats on the job. I hope it turns into a long career for you.

Six things to know from one Rookie to another:

1.) don’t do the bare minimum in the academy, or ever.
2.) be accountable for your actions (and mistakes) and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
    3.)...

One thing I have noticed is that the story gets juicier each time it’s told.

“I pulled him over and found a small bag of weed and a fixed blade knife that was 1/4” over the legal size” eventually becomes “I caught him doing 95 in a school zone and when I searched his car I found...

  • Police work isn't like Lethal Weapon 1 or 2, as much as you wish it will be. I believe you might be the type of person that watches NYPD Blue or Blue Bloods and think that the job is just like that and awesome 24/7. You will have lots of paperwork and policy (especially in the times we are in now) will...

Normally I do not provide answers to questions that appear to be homework assignments (which this feels like), but since I am waiting for my dinner to cook I could spare a few minutes.

I have not been on the job as long as some of the other respected LEO's that will chime in (Like Iowa...

As Not In My Town stated, baby shampoo seems to work very well. I unfortunately did not have access to baby shampoo when I was Oc sprayed. I took a cold shower (leaned forward so the water didn’t trickle down to my nether regions) and then sat in front of the AC for two hours. It was worth missing...

  • Think twice about self sponsoring, it’s a relatively expensive process with no guarantee for getting hired.

Apply to all the agencies you can find, be prepared to move for the job....

  • In all honesty, I don’t think you accurately can, not have I read studies that have a correlation.

I believe a lot of the cases with lower GPA is simply due to partying too much and not studying enough. The potential is there, but the desire to have fun prevails, which makes sense because...

If I remember correctly, the APD-5 had a section dedicated to this. They may DQ; they have put applicants on review for similar and lesser red flags.

  • I agree that “C’s and D’s get college degrees” and a 2.0 GPA is the same degree as a 4.0 GPA, but the GPA does have an impact in certain situations. A bachelors in marketing is the same degree whether you were top of the class or bottom of the pile.

    1.) Many federal agencies (including...

The fighting in high school would probably not be a big deal unless it was frequent or severe in nature.

Your BI will ask you about this, be truthful and don’t minimize and I sure hope you can truthfully say you have made several changes to your life to prevent it from happening again.

These are the type of responses that should be posted when someone asks a question. No emotion, just facts, and the opportunity to discuss more. The question was answered thoroughly by someone who knows what they are talking about.

Too many replies on the forum that are based on emotion/opinion...
