    If you are young and relatively lacking in life experience (not saying that you are, only if...), I'd recommend looking at the larger departments (Houston, Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Worth, etc). I think they will tend to have better training for newbies who have never had a job like this....

    Not based on performance at all. You get to list your preferences, but ultimately it's based on need. They can usually at least put you at the substation you want to work out of....

    Ha!.. I'm pretty sure no such map exists of Austin. I would not bother learning geography (other than the major highways) until you get assigned to a sector. I've lived in Austin nearly my entire life, and there are many parts I don't know well.

    One thing you might want to consider is asking the officer "Why?" For instance, the officer may be looking for something very specific, such as if your vehicle matched the description of a vehicle involved...

    I went through the regular academy, so I don't know what the biggest hurdle will be for laterals. I guess going through another academy and starting all over?.. Your FTOs will most likely have less than 5 years on the job. Some of them will treat you like a rookie. No choice but to go along with it....
