  • DEA and IRS is where I would look if I wanted to work financial crimes and money laundering. But in any agency you are going to be doing grunt work for years before you get to do stuff you want to do. That is just how it works. In a local agency it will be much worse in that respect than as a fed. But...

  • I say proceed with caution. The Patrol ain't a bad gig if you land in a good spot but there are a lot more bad locations than there are good ones. And transfers can take 8 to 17 years so wherever you get sent initially, you will be there a while. As far as benefits go, medical, dental and vision pans...

You can fail to complete just about everything in PT (except staking drills) but pass the final PT test and graduate. Or at least that was the case when I went through it but that was over a decade ago.

If you fail to keep up during PT you will be singled out and humiliated on a daily...

Then I stay stand pat and try to ride it out. Bang in sick any time you feel ill in any way and be cautious at work. And if you happen to injure your back in the performance of your duties, don't rush back to work.

It sounds like you are in a real bad spot with your current job but the other job you are considering doesn't sound that great either. As a chief union steward myself, have you considered becoming a steward on your job? What does your CBA say about retaliation for union related activities? It sounds...

Sit down and do the math. Can you afford the hit financially? Will the move hurt your retirement? If the math works out and you can swing it, then you have to start asking about the other agencies issues. No place is perfect. But if you can make it with less money and put up with the new agency's issues...

Just note, the CBPO's retirement was not considered 6C/12d law enforcement retirement by most agencies a few years ago. Don't know about today though but I'd be very careful about that if you are using the CBPO position to stop the clock on your federal LE retirement before age 37. The Patrol is 6c/12d...

Its commonly done on my job for intel purposes. Its not disseminated to anyone without a need to know so I can't see why it would be an issue from a legal stand point. They are not used in court.

We get pay that is equal to LEAP. Only difference is we have to actually work the hours we are paid. On LEAP, many of the people work 8 and leave. But when I worked in New York the DEA and USMS would work until 3 am and have to be back at work at 7, but would get paid for only 10 hours. In the Patrol...
