  • A few questions about PA State Police Detectives

Hello, I'm an author writing a crime novel about a murder in Pennsylvania, and I'd love to get a few specifics on the procedural aspects of how PA State Police Detectives work. Specifically, these are the the plot points I'd like to get as accurate as possible:

My novel is set in a very rural, lightly populated county in Pennsylvania where there is minimal violent/major crime. How many detectives, on average, would the State Police have in such an area? And would it ever be realistic for a Detective to work on his or her own (no partner) due to short staffing, etc?

Do State Police Detectives work specific shifts (for example, Mon-Fri 8-4, etc.) or is it realistic for them to work weekends/long days.

Would a Troop that serves such a rural area have a forensics unit or would the Troopers/Detectives tackle that on their own?

Anyone is welcome to comment here or to PM me or and I can give you my phone # if it would be easier.

    Many thanks in advance!
