Pettitte has decided: He's going to retire

Winningest postseason pitcher will make announcement Friday

    By Bryan Hoch / | 02/03/11 2:02 PM EST

NEW YORK -- Andy Pettitte told the Yankees not to count on his return and entered the winter leaning toward retirement, believing he was needed more at home than on the mound.
After months of waiting and speculation, the 38-year-old left-hander has made a final decision. Pettitte will announce his retirement Friday at a 10:30 a.m. ET news conference at Yankee Stadium. The news conference can be seen live on and

The all-time leader in postseason wins (19), starts (42) and innings pitched (263), Pettitte pitched for 16 seasons in the Major Leagues, 13 of them for the Yankees, with whom he won five World Series championships. His 240 career wins are the 13th-most by a left-hander in Major League history. Pettitte won five World Series titles with the Yankees -- 1996, 1998-2000 and 2009 -- and appeared in three other Fall Classics. In postseason play, he is tied for second in strikeouts (173) with Roger Clemens, 26 behind John Smoltz

Sucks to see him retire but it seems like he's tired and just wants to be with his family...He had a good career, 5 World Series not bad...

He's probably going to the Hall of Very Good. No Cy Youngs and an admitted HGH user.

Yankees look bleak at starting pitching now for the foreseeable future.
This show is awesome, wrapped in supercool and smothered in bitchin. The only way it could be cooler is if he was riding a unicorn or something.

Pettitte is not a Hall of Famer at all. End of discussion.

Not a Famer, but a pretty good money pitcher. IIRC, he said his HGH use was to rehab from an injury. Still against the rules, but he was more forthcoming about it then others who are now in potentially serious trouble. Bonds and Clemens, based on their numbers, would have been first ballot locks. Neither of them will get in. Same with Sosa, McGwire, and Palmiero.

As an aside, the NFL QB with the best pure arm I ever saw belonged to Mark McGwire's brother, Dan. He wasn't a star by any means, but he was 6'8, and could throw 40 yard outs from the opposite hashmark like it was nothing. He said once that that throw is just a dart, and it's where quarterbacks could really show off their arms.

Others on the best pure arm list:

          John Elway
          Bert Jones
          Brett Favre
