My son and I just caught this one.
While animated, I would say this is not for pre-teen or younger...it's very dark, and even a little nihilistic. There's some heavy references to the Nazi war machine, as well as the old sci-fi notions that machines can turn on their makers.
The animation was amazing, and you soon forget that the main characters are burlap dolls doing battle with a relentless AI "Machine" intent on destroying anything that shows signs of life.
I'd say it was equal parts horror movie (you know, when everyone relaxes because the bad guy is dead, when suddenly his eyes open?); war movie (can they win when they are out-manned and out-gunned?); and fantasy/mystical (One Ring to rule them all/Luke, I am your father) with a dash of action (let's just blow this mutha up!)
We both really enjoyed it...despite the tense moments.
I'd say if you like stuff like great animation with darker themes you will like this movie.
