  • How good are their accents?

Just watching "Black Hawk Down". Given about half the cast are Brits, who do their US accents measure up? In fact generally, do Brit actors pretending to be Americans irritate beyond measure or are there honourable exceptions?
I'm a little bit waayy, a little bit wooah, a little bit woosh, I'm a geezer.

Funny, you should ask, they all did very well - The guy who played (the senior) Malfoy in Harry Potter, I absolutely did not recognize him, the first time I saw the movie in the theatre, due to the shaved head and American accent. Eric Bana's an Australian and his Texas accent sounded okay.

On the flip side, for you, which Americans have sounded awful, and which have nailed it trying to pass themselves off as Brits in the movies.

Isn't that guy from House, Hugh Laurie a brit? I had NO IDEA he was. His American is natural. Also Ed Westwick (sp) from Gossip Girl that plays Chuck Bass is a brit and his American is perfect too. I guess "American" is easier to do because its so different all over the country perhaps?

Hey, anything's better than trying to pass off Sean Connery as a Soviet Sub Captain...."Comrades, today we sail the Red October into history....but first, the haggis!"

          Other foreigners playing Americans:
Dominick Purcell (Australian) as Lincoln Burrows on Prison Break (accent is so so)

Yvonne Strzechowski (also Australian) as Sarah Walker on Chuck (accent's very good)

Anthony LaPaglia (Australian) as Jack Malone on Without a Trace (accent pretty good)

Poppy Montgomery (Australian) as Sam Spade on Without a Trace (accent pretty good)

Marianne Jean-Baptiste (British) as Vivian Johson on Without a Trace (very good accent -- do these guys hire actual Americans???)

Anna Friel (British) as Chuck on Pushing Daisies (good accent)

Michelle Ryan (British) was Jaimie Sommers on last year's DREADFUL Bionic Woman. Accent was not good.

As far as Hugh Laurie goes, his accent wasn't perfect when he first started House. You could hear traces of it in the first season. But it's dead on now. It's actually quite shocking to hear him in his native accent.

All the guys in Black Hawk Down were pretty good, although I thought Eric Bana's accent was a little weak. However, it wasn't obvious that he was not American; if anything, it sounded like he was an American but trying to imitate a Texan accent. The guy who did Capt Steele was pretty flawless, and I thought Ewan McGreggor was pretty good too.

Don't forget Damien Lewis on Life, he also rocked it in Band of Brothers.

I've never seen Life, but I heard it was good. Do you think one could pick it up pretty easily this season?

It was one of those shows I wanted to watch, but falls on a work night, so I've not seen it at all....I just love Damien Lewis...as an actor.

If you have seen the movie "Tin Man" the guy who plays Ambrose/The Scarecrow was the best faked American Accent I have ever heard.

I thought Cpt Steele did fine but the entire movie used the word "Hooah" in the wrong context. I mean, if you know what it is, you'd know what I mean. I didnt think it fit the right situations. It isnt just something you throw out there every sentence, although some idiots seem to anyways, completely misusing the word and making that branch look like a bunch of retards...Just my opinion...

...and of course Gary Oldman, who seems to be able to do any accent from American Detective to Undead Transylvanian!

I thought Ewen McGregor also did a decent Southern Accent for "Big Fish".

As for Americans doing other accents - I thought Robert Downey Jnr's Australian one in Natural Born Killers and Tropic Thunder was v good.

I liked the accent Renée Zellweger did for Bridget Jones. People say that I sound like her but my accent is hardly noticable anymore. I'm American, I promise!
