  • Coming To Canada With Your Gun.

Hi guys, just joined the forum and love it!

Anyways, this thread is kind of a spin off of the one regarding bringing your gun onto a cruise ship, then into Mexico.

As my name implies, I work for Canada Customs in Niagara Falls. This is more of an informative thread than anything else. Basically, I'm sick of arresting cops!!!! If you are coming to Canada and you have a gun in your car, any type of gun, please tell us about it. We hold them, free of charge, until you leave the country.

I don't know why people, especially cops, find it necessary to lie about having a gun in their vehicle when we ask about it. You guys know better than anyone, I don't WANT to arrest/throw people in jail, I do it because the person makes me. I've seen too many cops/military/corrections officers arrested for this reason.

Just because you are a cop, or have a concealed weapon permit or whatever doesn't give you the right to lie about having your gun or to carry it in Canada. Our laws concerning firearms are soo much stricter than they are in the US. We ask if you have a gun in the vehicle because it's really not a big deal, as long as you tell us about it. It becomes a big deal when you lie, and we find it while searching your car.

Here's how things work while crossing the border for those of you who don't know:

1- You pull up to the booth with either a passport, or a birth certificate and photo ID for every occupant of the vehicle ready. (Yes, even children, they're people to!!)
2- Answer any and all questions that you are asked.
3- Depending on your answers to the questions the officer then decides to "Release or Refer". Once they make their decision, it's called the Point of Finality. The choice is made and that is what is going to happen. Either you are going up the road or you are getting searched.
4- You either a) go up the road or b) get searched/speak with Immigration.
4b) - You pull into Secondary, where we search your car. Now, let’s say you have a gun in your car that you didn't tell the officer in the booth about. As you’re driving into Secondary you realize, "Oh ****, I might get in trouble if they search my car and find my gun!!", so when an officer comes out to your vehicle you spontaneously tell them about your gun. TOO BAD, it's too late now, you’re in ****! Whether we formally charge you or not is a bit of a toss up because you did at least tell us you had the gun and didn't make us work for it. At the very least, however, the gun will be seized and you'll have to pay anywhere from $200-? to get your vehicle back. Then you get sent back to the US and your vacation is ruined.

Bottoms line, just tell us, please!!!!

Sorry for taking soo long but someone had to get the word out. I'm tired of arresting good people because they didn't know any better.

    Thanks for reading all that,
    Chris

P.S.-It only takes like 2 min. for us to do the form for holding your firearm so don't use that as an excuse.

So, what are the correct answers for "release"?

Of course, the PBA decal on your license plate means "refer", because, as we all know, crazy American cops think they need guns wherever they go. Someday there may be reciprocity, but until then, be thankful that Canada is such a "safe" country.

I've crossed the border into Canada many, many times. And I've crossed at Niagara Falls a lot too. I never once even thought about bringing a gun along with me, except that time I was hunting in New Brunswick.

The exchange went something like this:

Customs: What is the purpose of your visit to Canada?

              Me: Deer hunting

Customs: how many guns? What type?

              Me: two, both hunting rifles.

              Customs: Have a nice trip.

US Customs didn't give us any trouble either, just as long as we didn't have any potatos with us (apparently, there was some sort of ban at the time).

I fail to understand people sometimes. I don't know why so many people equate possessing a gun to being secure. How did it get to the point that we are all running so scared that we can't even go on a family vacation unarmed? We shouldn't fault Canada for their own laws.

I don't think that it is an issue of being "secure" or "scared". We are given a right and a tool and I say use them if they are available. Crazies don't give you and your family day passes just because you are on vacation.

Quick question about the ID required to enter. If I am just going across whatever bridge that is from Detroit to Canada to shop in the immediate area do I still need my birth certificate? Also, my 4yo daughter doesn't have a picture ID. I'm assuming I'll need to get her one, correct?

You disagree? Say that to a victim of a violent crime, I'm sure they'll agree with you.

Actually LPI, I'm the survivor of a home invasion.

Lucky for me, even though the call was sent as a report of residential burg (aka cold call), the officer responding decided to skip a stop at the Denny's for breakfast. He walked right past the suspect on his way to what was left of my front door. He was leaving after making a third trip - he was kinda surprised I was no longer in the closet he had tried to barricade me in - I managed to push the bottom of the chair he had jammed under the door knob far enough to make it fall.

Of course, the officer couldn't know it was the suspect - he had showered and changed between trips. One of his friends was trying to punch the lock on my car door, probably to steal it - I'm guessing the plan was to take me to a secondary location - but I spoiled everything by getting loose.

He left one good print, and he had priors - he was arrested a week later.

Now, I know there are people out there that feel the only way they can feel safe is if they have their gun with them. It took me a long time to go back out in the world without being jumpy. But I also think I can practice good situational awareness, use good judgement, and have a pretty safe vacation.

First a quick response to this...post 9/11, it's always a prudent idea to carry proof of citizenship with you even just for a day trip - not only to come into Canada but to save any hassle getting back into the US. As for your little one, no picture ID is required, but if it's only one parent travelling it's a good idea to have a permission note from the other parent or custody papers.

As for my two cents on the issue of cross-border carry, dfwblue - - your rights aren't being infringed upon when you're in MY country. Just as you're sworn to uphold the laws in your jurisdiction, I'm sworn to uphold them in mine and that includes stricter gun control than the USA. Personally I have little problem with responsible gun ownership, but please remember that the Second Amendment does't extend north of the 49th Parallel.

Sorry, I think you are confused about my response. I kind of hijacked the thread and my response was directed towards the person I quoted. I completely agree with the original poster.
