Then I'm good to go. Most likely, unless there's some weird CA laws. I've never held a real gun before. Would it be weird to just go up there and start shooting without knowing anything about it?

It depends who you are with, my father has been taking me to the range since I was 8. As far as going by yourself in Illinois you cannot legally own a weapon until you are 18, so I would assume 18.
