  • An interesting Mother's Day Story

I made the 50 mile drive up to Santa Monica to take my 91 year old mother to dinner for Mother's Day. We went to her favorite Mexican restaurant just down the street from her apartment.

As we were waiting for our food, a couple walked by and I caught a glance from the man. There was a smile on his face and his eyes lit up for a second as he looked over at us. He was about five or 10 years younger than me and from his appearance - his haircut, his build and his clothing, he looked like he might be a police officer or a retired cop. There was something about his face that seemed familiar, as if he was someone from another agency I may have worked with briefly 20 or 30 years ago and forgotten about, but nothing rang a bell. They continued past us and I thought nothing more of it.

About 10 minutes later the man returned to our table, bent over, gestured to my mother and said, "This woman reminds me very much of my grandmother and I would like to buy the two of you dinner. I hope this takes care of it." He then slipped some folded bills under my hand.

For the first time in years I was speechless, but my mother was sharp enough to thank him. He then walked off.

When I looked under my hand he left us three, neatly folded $20 bills.

I've never had something like that happen before. My first impulse was to run after the man and return the money, but I realized doing that would burst his good deed bubble. I guess I will have to pay it forward to some stranger.
