  • I would hate to be a police officer/fireman in China right now...

Rampant attacks by giant hornets in northwest China have killed 42 people and have injured more than 1,600 others, according to state officials.

The flying insects, believed by biologists to be Asian giant hornets, are able to get as big as two inches in length with stingers as long as 1/5 of an inch.

Their toxic sting has led to anaphylactic shock and renal failure in some of their victims, who have reported attacks in the area since July, Chinese news agency Xinhua reports.

The city of Ankang in southern Shaanxi providence has reported the most deaths from the attacks with 230 people stung so far stung. Other cities heavily hit include Hanzhong and Shangluo.

    CNN
Giant hornets are the cause of 30-50 deaths each year. Some have been spotted in Chicago as far back as 2012, stoking fears they may become more prevalent in the U.S. Officials fear the death toll may rise however, with many victims currently hospitalized in critical or serious condition, the Mirror reports.

One survivor of an attack in Ankang recalled to Xinhua of looking after her millet crop when the massive insects suddenly swarmed.

"The hornets were horrifying," she said. "They hit right at my head and covered my legs. All of a sudden I was stung and I couldn't move.

"Even now, my legs are covered with sting holes."

    CNN
A person stung by the giant hornets still had markings on their arm. One victim reported being hospitalized for two months since her attack. The sting victim has been hospitalized for two months since the attack, and has received 13 dialysis treatments and 200 stitches, according to the report.

Local authorities say they are working to remove the unusually high number of hives while providing more than $1 million in aid to affected areas, CNN reports.

Since their effort, about 710 hives have been removed.

Some scientists have suggested a potential cause for the high number of the insects is that they are from unusually dry weather, which allows them to breed more easily.

    CNN
Pesticides are sprayed to kill the hornets. At least 710 hives have been removed since their attacks.

In Japan, Asian giant hornets, which are also known as Japanese giant hornets, are the cause of 30 to 50 human deaths annually, according to the University of Michigan's Museum of Zoology.

Sightings of these lethal creatures haven't been confined to Asia however, with some of their earliest sightings in the U.S. reported in the Chicago area in July 2012.

Since that first report in Arlington Heights, a Facebook page was created by the public to share similar sightings.

Because of the insects' rarity in the U.S., it has since grown to include photos of similar insects, such as cicada killer wasps and yellow jackets, which are native to the U.S.

The Asian giant hornets' hibernation is said to come in December.

I'm not sure if you guys live in areas that are infected by stink bugs, but those came over years ago from Asia and started here in Pennsylvania. Granted they're not deadly at all, but they are beyond annoying. Thanks a lot Asia!!
