  • Learn something new?

I am always pleased when I learn something new, even surprised when it's something that catches me off guard or perhaps something I think I should have known.

Today, I learned that while the Federal gov't ended prohibition in 1933, Mississippi didn't until 1966. Surprised me greatly.

What did you learn recently that surprised you?

I'm working on my graduate degree and recently learned that American Indians who live on reservations and are members of federally recognized tribes are not covered by the U.S. Constitution since they are considered residents of a sovereign nation. There have been various federal laws enacted that allows Indians to have basically the same protection, but that protection is afforded by other legislative processes and not the constitution.

I remember hitting on that briefly in a Constitutional law class, but I never explored it further. Interesting.

Apparently 50sq miles of Georgia is in Tennessee because of a mapping error made when the state borders were drawn.

Jimmy Carter is the first US President to be born in a Hospital.
This show is awesome, wrapped in supercool and smothered in bitchin. The only way it could be cooler is if he was riding a unicorn or something.

human thigh bones are stronger than concrete?

Infact, for size all bones are much stronger thatn concrete. About 8 times. They're flexible, lightweight and super hard. Yet will break if alot of force is given. A thigh bone can withstand about a tonne of stress before snapping. This depening on a person's health. The lower joint of a femur, pretty much impossible to break with a hammer, yet hollow bones will break with a brick, slab of concrete or a hammer. Imagine a bit of concrete the size of a bone, it would break easily... Wouldn't it?

This profession is not for people looking for positive reinforcement from the public. Very often it can be a thankless job and you can't desire accolades, because those are not usually forthcoming. Just do your job to the best of your ability and live with the decisions you've made.

I recently learned something about the speed of light. If you are looking at a star that is 10,000 light years away, you are actually seeing what it looked like 10,000 years ago because it takes 10,000 year for the light to reach your eyes. So you may actually be looking at something that is no longer there.
