I think using the code name "Geronimo" was also in bad taste. I would have used the name "Kunta Kinte". I don't think anyone would've been offended by that name.

1. Not really relevant, it was a nickname by which his own people and relatives refer to him. He was known by other names too. "Apache" is not the tribe's name for themselves either, but it is what they are called.
2. The Apache are a group of nations, not a single tribe. And they and his descendants are among the "whiners".
3. Within that context it is a complement of a warrior mindset.

Anyway, I was originally thinking I would share some insight so people may understand why it's seen as an issue, but I will just shut the heck up.

It kinda goes back and forth on if it was the name of the operation or the code name for bin Laden himself. It was both, given that they said "...Geronimo EKIA". If they had used a different code name, like say the report had been: "The president and top aides were gathered in the White House situation room to monitor the progress of the operation Sunday afternoon when the message "Ronald Reagan EKIA" -- indicating that bin Laden had been killed in action -- was called in from Pakistan." You know threads would be popping up all over this forum! lol

Years ago, there was a big thing about Washington being named Redskins. Jack Kent Cooke was the owner at the time, and he said about the protesters, "They can buy the team from me and call it whatever they want."

Central Michigan University teams are called the Chippewas. They haven't had to change it because the Chippewa Tribe in their area likes the exposure the nickname gives them (and their casinos).
