    Overall, I believe ride alongs are a good thing. They're essential for new dispatchers in order for them to better understand what goes on out on the road. It's also an eye opener for civilians. I don't know how many times I heard them remark, "Geeze, I had no idea..."

    Having said that, I always kind of cringed when I was told to return to the office in order to pick up a rider. When you work alone, you get used to it. I never looked forward to having a rider, but most times it worked out OK.

    I would tell them that if/when SHTF, stay in the car unless I tell you otherwise. If I'm busy on the radio, hold your questions. Otherwise, feel free to ask questions. More than once, I had riders say that they'd seen enough, and asked to be returned to the office.
