As I prepared to shave this morning I looked into the mirror and looked at my left eyebrow and the 4 inch scar where I have lost half of my eyebrow. The night of terror came back to me all these years later as it does many times over the years.
It was a family disturbance, we arrived and tried to arrest the husband for battery, a fight ensued and the suspect got a hold of my partners gun, I was in front of the suspect restraining his brother and in a instant a gun came up, placed against my head and fired. I instantly knew that I was shot as blood was running down my face into my left eye, more shots were fired and my partner was shot in the knee, the suspect was shot and killed in front of his entire family on the front lawn.
I am so thankful that my name wasn't added to the wall of fallen heros but I will never ever forget November 9, 1974 at 2300hours.
