Soldier's remain's returned home to fanfare

    I love this state...

    Story/Video

TERRELL, Texas - There was a rolling tribute in North Texas Wednesday for a soldier killed in Afghanistan.

The salute included dozens of police cars and fire engines in a caravan between Greenville and Terrell. It was a remarkable welcome home for 24-year-old Staff Sgt. Shawn McNabb and a heart-felt show of support for his grieving family.

McNabb was killed when his helicopter crashed shortly after completing its mission. The combat medic had already completed three tours in Iraq. This time he was on his first tour in Afghanistan soldiering with an elite unit.

A chartered jet carrying his body arrived from Dover Air Force Base just before noon. Fire trucks provided a canopy of water as it taxied to a stop a Majors Field in Greenville.

The procession from Greenville to McNabb’s home town of Terrell stretched for miles. Firefighters, paramedics and police officers from all across North Texas gathered to honor the soldier and comfort his family.

All along the way people gathered by the roadside waving flags and saluting with hands over hearts.

More people lined the streets of Terrell and waited at the funeral home where once again an Army honor guard was waiting.

“They’re celebrating his life. They’re celebrating what he believed in,” said his mother Ann McNabb. “People are just loving us through this. Nothing can replace Shawn, but we’re just overwhelmed.”

Father David McNabb said he his son was proud to be a soldier.

“We’re very proud he gave his life to this country,” he said. “Our friends, our family, strangers are welcoming my son to Texas. How proud can one be of our community.”

Funeral services for McNabb will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Terrell.

Instead of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to:
