  • Obama and the school systems

    http://www.eduinreview.com/blog/2009...d-school-year/

For this generation of students to remain competitive with their international peers as adults, they need to start spending more time in school. This week President Obama proposed that American school children extend their time in class, either by lengthening the school day, or spending less time on summer vacation.

“We can no longer afford an academic calendar designed when America was a nation of farmers who needed their children at home plowing the land at the end of each day,” Obama said. He continued to say “That calendar may have once made sense, but today, it puts us at a competitive disadvantage. Our children spend over a month less in school than children in South Korea. That is no way to prepare them for a 21st century economy.”

In fact, American children spend the least amount time in the classroom when compared to other countries. Currently, the school year length in the States is 180 days. Advocates are pushing further toward a 200-day school year, which would align with Thailand, Scotland and the Netherlands, and leave us a close second with Israel, South Korea and Japan, who leads with a 243-day school year.

This comes as Obama makes it very clear that education is on his hot-list of priorities. He admits the notion of spending more time in school is not “wildly popular”, but necessary.

He was applauded for his breadth of knowledge regarding the public education system in the U.S. He cited that one-third of the 13- and 14-year-olds in our country cannot read at an appropriate level for their age, and that the eighth grade curriculum is two years behind competing nations. He says the part of the problem is our “race to the bottom” mindset, wherein states are comfortable with lower standards for students.

Obama and his Secretary of Education Arne Duncan are truly advocates for a superior education system than that we’ve previously and currently known. It’s imperative that states use the stimulus package money to rebuild curriculum, increase teacher pay, improve school conditions, offer newer technologies to students and even extend the school year to ensure that this generation can not only keep up with their international peers, but even surpass them in the professional environment of the coming decades.

I think school should be year round with 4 weeks of " vacation" to be taken at the parents leisure without penalty. Of course normal business holidays off. Just like the rest of the country.

I think it would help with students having to re-learn after a long summer break and if properly implemented bring our education level back towards the top on a global scale.

There he is, bringing up race again.

Seriously though, one wonders how we made it this far without his omnipresent guidance.

I know when I was a kid, I looked forward to summer breaks.....it gave me something to look forward to when I was in elementary/middle school. Spent a lot of my summer break visiting my grandparents, taking family vacations, visiting friends, and reading....

When I was in highschool, summer was a chance for me to put in 60-70 hour weeks working. I'd be pretty stinkin' annoyed at that age if my summer vacation was removed......

Once again this socialist Obama is trying to dictate our lives! How you going to tell me what is too long for MY kids!! How about trying to BETTER or IMPROVE the public education system rather than dictating when our children should get out and go to school, or how long their vacation should be! Once again, Obama is comparing our nation to communist nation and children. WTF!! This is dictatorship what Obama is doing! Why should our children spend "less time" on vacation because that's what OBAMA wants them too??? These are OUR children NOT Obama's children, and I take offense because I feel he is calling our children of America "dumb" - We may not be "ahead" of other countries, but OBAMA, dont YOU NEVER EVER down grade the children or citizens of this great country of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!

I wonder if this will increase the drop out rate? Or even the "ditch school" rate? In my opinion, if his goal is to prepare the kids for the current economy and lifestyles of today, he should lower the tuition in colleges so more people can afford to go since, I believe, that is when "kids" gain the maturity level to actually give a crap.

High school is that elevator that takes forever to get to the top floor; waiting to get it over with.

              Lets talk economics.
How many employers hire students to work crappy menial jobs for pay that couldn't support a family. Now without that work force who will work those jobs. oh wait we can just up minimal wage and make the tax payers take the hit. Lets see now we have those teenagers not spending their disposable income on brittney spears cd's and x box games so everyone is going to up prices to make up for the loss in bottom line. Wishful thinking, I mean jeeze some of this guys ideas its like we have a 6th grader in office.

Ive met a few sixth graders that I would trust more than him in office....
And as far as filling those crappy positions, there are plenty of illegals who would LOVE the reduction in teens in the workplace due to year round schooling. In fact, we could truck them up here by the bus load to fill the McD's and Taco Bells (which are now authentic mexican food).

My thoughts EXACTLY. Since when has MORE time in school ever done anything to increase education?

Like to see how these students would react...and they've only been in school a month or so!

End of family vacations, and end of any tourist area business like Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills.

I think a longer day is useless. Year round is good to go. Nothing like getting them used to the real world.

Jobs. They can work the same job after school that they do during the school year.

Flexible vacations throughout the year with no penalty. More family vacations throughout the year.

Fact is there would be less crime. criminal mischiefs, burglary's and motor vehicle thefts climb as soon as school lets out. Less unsupervised time to do stupid crap. Maybe we could get the US into the top 10 of industrialized nations in education at least. Pretty sad that we sit right in the middle and way behind alot of other places.

It will take more than just time in class though. They need higher standards.

The rest of the world seems to do okay with a school system that operates more like what has been proposed. Our current system was setup based on an agrarian calendar as far as I know. Times have changed.
