  • Spine Pain?

I was playing drums tonight, and I noticed while I was playing I get this sharp pain right on my spine in the middle of my back, then my right arm twitches a few times. This scared me, so I immediately stopped playing. I guess pains around the spinal area are serious, but this is the very first time this has happened to me. Should I get this checked out just to be on the safe side?

Any ideas what this may be as well?

You are describing a early symptom of at least 400 things.

          Try a medical board.

Dr. M-11 has it right. "Back stuff" can be muscular in origin, or something to do with a vertebral disc, etc., etc. If the pain is right square up the center, it kinda rules out a kidney problem, but not 100%. ("Referred pain," ya know.)

So take two of your NSAID of choice, and call us in the morning. And maybe lay off the drums for awhile. (Don't take up guitar, either, or at least don't start with a Les Paul-style. Those are heavy.)

I'm a drummer too man. I've never had spin pains, but how are you sitting? are you sitting with back straight? Hunched over a lot? When did the pain hit? Were you playing normally? Doing a fill? Reaching for the cymbal?

If you had a pain in the spin and your arm twitched, it sounds like you might have pinched the motor nerves traveling to your arms. I'm no MD, so I don't know how that might happen, but I am taking a detailed Brain and Nervous system anatomy class, so that popped to mind. Could also be due to a compressed disk. Do you do a lot of jumping, hard landing, ect?

I'd get it checked out. Go to a chiropractor. You don't want to screw with the spine.

How in the #@*% are we supposed to know? Yes you should go to the doctor as he/she has gone to school for a godzillion years only to practice medicine. It only takes a high school diploma and perhaps some college to do what we do.

If your pee pee was going numb but it only happened once WOULD you go check it out ....just to be on the safe side???

OMG where do these people come from???
This profession is not for people looking for positive reinforcement from the public. Very often it can be a thankless job and you can't desire accolades, because those are not usually forthcoming. Just do your job to the best of your ability and live with the decisions you've made.

                    Thank you, Chevey.

I guess I am hunched over a bit, and I kind of sit high and far back. The pain started when I was a fill.

I dont do any jumping or anything, no.

Uhhh, well seeing that LE has some knowledge in medical stuff, I just thought I would innocently ask here since I am already registered here. Sorry if I inconvenienced anyone by asking.

Coulda been worse. If you'd asked on a musician forum, the drummers probably would have sympathized with you, everyone else would just make drummer jokes.

So, is it still giving you problems, and have you gotten it checked out by someone with M.D. or D.O. or other such initials after their name?

I hunch over a bit too. I think everyone does. The doctor should be able to tell you more about what to do to try to avoid whatever happened to you.

Btw, how long have you been playing?

I think it may be the way I am sitting (my posture)

I've been play ever since I was a little rug rat - 15-16 years now.

Oh ok...I was thinking that you might be new to playing. Sometimes new drummers go through weird little things like that.

                              Missed with that one lol
