A wire gets buried around the perimiter of the property, and the collar will beep if the dog gets within a set distance. If it does not heed the beep, it delivers a small shock to the dog. They learn real quick where they can go without the collar beeping.

In 1916, this was part of The Midland Trail, shortest highway from coast to coast, ran from Washington, DC at 14th and Pennsylvania ... to San Francisco. It was dirt then. The Midland Trail was marked with two six inch wide bands of orange seperated by a six inch band of black, usually painted on trees or posts ever so often. No route numbers in 1916.
