    2,000 Chickens Killed in Thruway Accident Near Buffalo

    (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) AP - A Canada-bound truck carrying 9,700 live chickens tipped on a Thruway ramp near Buffalo, closing the ramp for 1-1/2 hours Thursday afternoon.

    State police say the truck rolled as it left the New York State Thruway for northbound Interstate 190 about 2:30 p.m.

    Thursday, scattering crates of chickens on the roadway. The truck driver, Stanley Chesney, 47, sustained scrapes on his left arm and leg.

    The Buffalo News reports that about 2,000 of the chickens were killed or had to be euthanized. The Erie County SPCA was brought in to taken care of the chickens and determine which ones could be saved.

    The surviving were later hauled away in other trucks.

    State police say the driver was going to fast to make a turn, which caused his load to shift and the truck to jack knife.
