  • Polygraph coming up!

I am a nervous wreck! I know I'll be honest and have nothing to hide, but SHEESH I am anxious about it. Anyone have information or tips to ease my mind about the whole process? NOOO I don't want to know how to trick the system (as if there is such a thing), just need some peace! I am more worked up about this than I was going into my boards.

After this is psych and I am 100% done. I will start the Academy in January!

    Answer the questions truthfully

Relax as much as you can
Since some people need to be told by notes in crayon .......Don't PM me with without prior permission. If you can't discuss the situation in the open forum ----it must not be that important

My new word for the day is FOCUS, when someone irritates you tell them to FOCUS

Just answer the question asked - don't read into it. And be honest.

Why is it acceptable for you to be an idiot, but not acceptable for me to point it out?

I found it helped to really visualize in your head the situation they are asking you about. For example, if asked, "Have you been arrested? Then play in your head never having had cuffs put on you.

If asked to intentionally lie (for testing lie answers) for example, "Are you sitting down?" then visualize in your head your *** on that chair and defiantly answer, "No".

Last tip, breathe as normal as you can during the entire time. If you don't you will spike your heart rate making it harder for the test to be scored.

I found this to be the easiest and most productive way to do well on this test. The first thing, whatever and I mean whatever you put on your application is the truth. So when you get into the pre-interview, you should have no worries. If you're asked about how many times have you been stopped by Leo and you say twice, but you know it's more like 5-6 times, don't say "well this one time"..boom automatic DQ.

When on the machine, breathe slowly and imagine yourself at the beach. That's what I did. It kept me calm.

Remember, if you have nothing to lie about, you'll be fine. The polygraph is a tool designed to freak out recruits..it most of the time is a guide to assist in your integrity. PM if you have more questions.

And DO NOT change your answer.

I've taken 3 polygraphs, and passed 2. I failed one of them because I changed my answer.

Example: Before the polygraph, I was interviewed by the examiner.
I was asked if I ever provided alcohol to a minor. I replied NO, because I have never purchased alcohol for a minor.
Then the polygraph examiner asked "What about any party that you attended in college? Did you chip in for a keg?"
I replied that yes, I had.
He then asked "Did you stand by the keg and check ID's to make sure that everyone who had a drink from the keg was over 21?"
I replied that no, I had not.

He then asked again "So how many times did you provide alcohol to minors?"
I said, I don't know, I chipped in for maybe 3 kegs while I was away at college, so maybe 3 times.
He then said "That's what I thought..."

The exam went downhill from there, as you can imagine.
