  • GPSTC Questions ( Georgia Basic LE Training ).

Afternoon guys, just had a quick question for ya'll does anyone have any tips for GPSTC. I am in the process of applying I am about half way through my application process and just finishing up my background check. I still have a little ways to go I just thought it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and ask for any advice for the academy. I really have no idea what to expect, has anyone been to this academy? Im applying to the one in Forsythe, Georgia. Thanks guys for the help.

Don't take a cellular phone into the classroom, don't fall asleep in class and take notes if needed.

This list could be huge, but the essentials (in my opinion) are; study no matter how much you think you know the material (it will help in the long run). On the first day do not take anything to formation except your uniform, a pen, a small note pad, your duty belt, handcuffs, handcuff key and car/room key. DO NOT take mace/oc, baton, pistol mags, and of course no firearms. Shine your boots! Kiwi Parade Gloss is great. Don't lock your knees or you will pass out the first day. Academy is para-military, so don't speak unless spoken to and always answer with 'yes/no sir/ma'am until you understand how things operate. I'm at the Athens academy right now, feel free to pm me with any questions.

Chardy - How PT intensive is the Athens academy? My agency is sending me in January. I've been told that it has recently become para-military like most of the others in GA, but have also been told that it is not. Also, what are the hours normally like? Thanks for any info you can provide.

Sorry to get back so late. The Athens academy is mildly para-military. They are not going to yell at you like you see in the movies in military boot camp. There is a rank structure and a level of respect that you give those with higher rank. There is a military style formation and inspection every morning where required equipment is inspected and there is a raising of the US and Georgian flags, a salute, and the Pledge of Allegiance.

There is PT every morning. Every other morning you will run, and the opposite morning you will do plyometric exercises. There are 3 physical fitness assessments. The first is a baseline. All you need to do is show improvement in each assessment. You will run about 2-3 miles every other day. The assessment is 1.5 miles. So not very intense.

PT is at 0645 every morning. Formation is at 0830. And you can expect to never leave before 1630 every day. Always be where you are supposed to be 15 min before you are told to be there.

And a word of advise...Don't pick you class leader until the second week, or you may end up having a class leader that no one likes.

Calm down, worry less. Basic public safety LE academies are designed to take someone who has never shot a firearm and make them a ...passing..shooter. The fact that you have at least familiarized yourself with gun and shot it some makes you a little more prepared than the guy who has never held one. Plus, the more you try to "learn" how to shoot if you dont already know how, just means the more bad habits that the instructors are now going to have to un-teach you. Perfection and expert shooter levels can be attained after you pass the minimum, and firearms instructors can work with you after you get out of the academy (if they dont have time to do it during the academy) to hone your skills.

There are study guides out there at every book store for "Police Officer Exams " and whatnot. If you are someone who has to cram cram cram for a test and still barely passes, maybe you should pick one up, otherwise dont. All these books really do is teach for the test, not for the material you need to know. You would be better off buying a book ( or just google, everything is available) and study Constitutional criminal law, the Bill of Rights, and Georgia Law (eg OCGA) codebooks. You want to memorize something? Read the OCGA (Official Code of Georgia, Annotized) Chapters 16 (criminal) and 40 (Traffic). Know them. Memorize each detail, the code number, the minimum/maximum penalty range, etc.

HI, I was wondering if anyone has heard from SCMPD about the July academy? I have gone through the entire process and my file is now with Human Resources. I talked to my recruiting officer, Flowers, and she told me my file was with Human Resources. Any clues?
