MIAMI (WSVN) -- Police have arrested a woman after she drove without corrective lenses, ran a flashing red light, then hit and killed a corrections officer.
According to police, Lena Harris, 21, admitted to not wearing corrective contact lenses or glasses, which she had been required to wear in order to operate a vehicle, so police charged her with driving with a restricted license. Her bail was set to $500. It will be up to the state attorney's office whether Harris will face additional charges.
The accident took place on Northwest 46th Street and Seventh Avenue around 4 a.m., Tuesday when Rosa Echevarria, a corrections officer and 10-year veteran, traveled north on Northwest 46th Street in a Toyota. A Honda driven by Harris was headed eastbound on Seventh Avenue when Harris ran past a flashing red light and crashed into the Echevarria's vehicle.
On impact, the victim's vehicle flipped over, sending it onto the intersection's sidewalk, next to a traffic light pole. According to authorities, Echevarria died on the scene. "It's not only a fellow officer it's anybody, but, once you get to know people you work with, it's even worse," said Police Sgt. Manny Gonzales, a fellow officer at the scene. "We come out here all day, and, even if it's not an officer, it's just a bad sight, once we've seen these things."
Miami Fire Rescue workers transported one person to an area hospital with minor injuries. Echevarria's family did not want to speak on camera about their loss. She leaves behind two daughters.
May she rest in Peace with God.........
