Motorcycle hits guardrail, killing off-duty police officer

    LocalLinks

An off-duty police officer died early Tuesday when his motorcycle crashed into a guardrail, Hollywood police spokesman Capt. Tony Rode said.

Philip Berte, 56, was riding a Harley-Davidson eastbound in the 500 block of Dania Beach Boulevard about 2 a.m. when the crash occurred just east of the drawbridge that leads to State Road A1A.

Berte had just crossed over the bridge and was on an elevated traffic loop when he hit the rail and was thrown to the pavement below.

A Hollywood police officer saw Berte lying in the road some time later and called for help. Paramedics took him to Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he died.

Berte, an Indian Creek Village police officer in Miami-Dade County, was not wearing a helmet.
