  • Training Facility to Honor Two Fallen Deputies.

In Bradford County the memory of two fallen sheriff's deputies has sparked some action. There's an effort underway to build a new county-wide training center.

The steps of the Bradford County courthouse were packed Friday for the announcement of an event planned for October. A memorial walk-run is planned in honor of the county's fallen heroes, emergency medical personnel, firemen and law enforcement; in particular for sheriff's deputies Chris Burgert and Mike VanKuren. They killed in the line of duty last March.

The retired state trooper said the money raised will go to an account set up to fund a new training center, one that's long overdue, according to Sheriff Steve Evans.

There in support of the announcement were Elane VanKuren and Kim Burgert, the widows of the deputies. VanKuren said her husband trained with a dog and would have loved to have had access to such a center.

Organizers admit they don't know how much money they'll need to make the training center a reality. Sheriff Evans said they've gotten some grant money and there are other fundraisers in the works.

If you'd like to contribute to the fund, send your donations to:
