Originally posted by Chase211Is this the officer that was taken hostage? Do you know anything else...I'm curious to how that happened?
He was #2 on a traffic stop, as an arrest was about to go down, the suspect fought the officer, placed him in a headlock, and fired 2 shots to his head. He then fled accross the street into the post officer, and either shot himself, or died from shots from the other officer as he ran into the post office.

Policeman's death stuns Pine Lake
Violence rare in tiny DeKalb town

The scene outside the Pine Lake Police Department on Friday morning was out of place in the little town in DeKalb County that feels like a 1950s lake resort.
Television trucks were parked nearby, and camera crews were set up. The town's police chief, Sarai Y'Hudah-Green, was holding a news conference on the shooting death of Officer Francis Ortega, who was killed in a shootout Thursday afternoon at the Pine Lake post office.

"Officer Ortega loved his job and loved his family," she said. "He was just a hardworking man just trying to provide and have the best for his family."
Y'hudah-Green was outside because the tiny Police Department is too small to handle such a crowd. The department is on the bottom floor of what used to be a Unitarian church.
