Two Deputies Shot, One Fatally, In Fort Lauderdale

Miami Herald via the Associated Press

Two Broward Sheriff's Office deputies were shot this morning -- one fatally -- with a high-powered weapon.

They were serving an arrest warrant on the home of a pedophile at 1950 NE 57th St. in Fort Lauderdale, according to BSO.

The deputies have not yet been identified. One was pronounced dead at North Broward Medical Center. The other was transported to the hospital and was in stable condition, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue.

The Florida Highway Patrol shut down portions of Interstate 95 to make way for the ambulances carrying the deputies.

The dead deputy was shot in the chest, according to a fire official. The other deputy was shot in the shoulder and hand.

A multi-agency task force had just completed an investigation into child pornography at the address of the shooting, according to Jim Leljedal, a BSO spokesman.

That address is the home of Kelly Ray Jones, a registered sex offender. Fort Lauderdale police say they have been to the home many times.

Jones, 40, was arrested last month and accused of sending illicit images of nude children to the same undercover detective who brought a child-pornography case against him three years ago, BSO said.

Jones used the Internet to send several pornographic images of children to an undercover St. Lucie County sheriff's deputy working online in the Law Enforcement Against Child Harm Task Force, the BSO said.

The LEACH detective who received the photos on the computer happened to be the same investigator who arrested Jones in March 2001 on six counts of child pornography, according to the BSO.

At the time, Jones was also charged with soliciting to commit lewd battery. Those charges were filed in connection with Jones' plans to travel to St. Lucie County to have sex with a child, according to the BSO.

LEACH Task Force investigators, working with Fort Lauderdale police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, also got a search warrant for Jones' home last month and removed evidence then.

The deputies who were shot on Thursday came to the house again to execute another search warrant, presumably for computers, videotapes and other materials.

Jones is a registered sexual offender who violated his federal probation when he was arrested last month, BSO said. His probation agreement also prohibited him from using the Internet.

He was placed in jail without bail last month.

    Neighbors reported hearing several shots.

''I heard five shots,'' said Arlene Marcus, who lives near the home. ``It sounded like maybe roofers were using a gun. I wouldn't believe that's what they might have been. This is not the first time. The media was here about a year ago.''

Neighbors said police had notified them that Jones was a registered pedophile

We stopped our D.T. session today when we heard that..

    I'm sad for their families.

BTW: Lauderdale isn't in Miami, it's in Broward, about 18 miles away from north Miami.

My heart goes out to the men and women of BSO and to the families. In 1990 a friend of mine with BSO was shot and killed while sitting in his patrol car. Reading the news today brought all those memories back.

Amen to that Python... This is just another reminder that it's not only uniforms that take a hit.. Plenty of CID guys and gals are getting it to.. Just remember.. THe game has no rules, doesn't matter if your in uniform or not.. Your still a target.

To the BSO family.. God Bless and remember all the positive expierences.

I heard the news about the BSO deputy from a family member who works for another agency and had been at the same house a few weeks prior to today to arrest his partner who had lived with him. Both of the men were registered sex offenders on probation. My thoughts and prayers are with the deputy's family as well as all of BSO. This is the second BSO deputy in two years to be killed in the line of duty the other happend in April of last year when deputy Philip Billings was shot and killed working an off-duty detail at a car dealership.

This is called "freedom of the press" and before this comes out wrong, no I don't support the press. They don't think before the air a story on tv or print one in the paper. very few times do they seem to help us. If we cry foul, they cry "freedom of the press" gives them the right to do as they please. They will put their spin to any story out there, give the bad guys information, no matter who may be hurt by it. Just to get the story.

Angel I also understand where your coming from however the news got most of the information from Sheriff Jenne I saw him hold up the bullet and describe the rifle. I think that after this week and the burial of detective Fatta their will be a lot of would of could of type things being talked about. I think that they should have used the SWAT team to serve this warrant the more I hear about this sick individual and some of the previous threats that he made about killing police officers. However this is not the time to point fingers it is time to remember a man that gave his life for the people of Broward county.
