The officer who was killed, Kevin Toatley, was a seven-year veteran of the department.

Toatley was driving home on South Fulton Parkway near Buffington Road around 12:30 a.m. Saturday when police say he was hit head-on by a SUV going the wrong way on the freeway.

Toatley's patrol car burst into flames.

The SUV driver was taken to the hospital in serious condition and one of the passengers was critically injured.

Many of Toatley's squad members rushed to Grady Hospital where they learned of his death.

"He was admired by all those who worked with him and was admired by supervisors ... I've had a chance to talk with many of them tonight and try to help comfort them,” DeKalb County Director of Public Safety Dr. Cedric Alexander said.

This was a very long day, night and now morning for DeKalb police.

Toatley and many of the officers who went to the hospital after the head-on crash had worked the scene of a police chase that ended in a gun battle Friday afternoon.
