Our hopes and prayers for the Sergeant and his family. Whatever demons haunted him are silent now. Patrol heaven diligently, brother.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran says a sergeant with his office killed himself after negotiators pleaded with him to surrender his handgun.

The Mobile Press-Register reports that Cochran says the sergeant “became very distraught” Tuesday afternoon and barricaded himself inside a workroom.

The sheriff says fellow employees spotted the 51-year-old sergeant and called for help, and negotiators on the other side of the door began talking to him.

Cochran says the building was placed under lockdown as the negotiators talked to the sergeant for an hour and 40 minutes but could not get him to surrender his weapon.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Maj. Chad Tucker says the sergeant worked as an investigator with the department for several years.
