  • North Saint Paul, MN - Officer R.S. Crittenden

When police officers fall, large numbers of mourners turn out. But in the case of officer Richard Crittenden, those attending his funeral weren't strangers honoring the position he held, they were people who knew and loved the man.

Crittenden, 57, was shot to death Monday after responding to a domestic dispute. A preliminary report on the incident showed Crittenden died protecting a woman and her child from a man charging at them with a flaming rag.

The 4,000 people who gathered at the Aldrich Arena in Maplewood Friday for his funeral remembered that kind of heroism as one of Crittenden's traits, along with humor and kindness.

During the service, the eyes of tough cops filled with tears, and the raw emotion could be heard in the voices of those who spoke.

Sgt. Charles Kunkel of the North St. Paul Police Department said, "I will miss you my friend. I will miss you my brother."

Outside of the funeral thousands more lined a six-mile procession route to pay their respects.

Hundreds of police officers drove the route that wound past some of Crittenden's favorite places, including the Holiday Station, City Hall and the High School where he worked to make students better citizens.

Classes paused and students went outside to watch as the procession passed.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS talked with people all around North St. Paul, a city of about 12,000 people, and almost everyone knew Crittenden.

Lois Schroeder of Oakdale said, "He was wonderful to everyone, the children, everyone he touched, he was superman."

Crittenden's body was cremated and his urn will be held by his wife, so there was no burial.

Crittenden is survived by his wife, a son, a stepdaughter and four grandchildren.
