  • K-9 victim of 9/11 attacks

Saw this as a group on facebook:

K-9 Sirius was killed on September 11th 2001. He was known as a "fallen officer" and was killed in Tower Two, where Port Authority's Police Station was located. He was a bomb detecting K-9 for the NY/NJ Port Authority Police Department.

His handler was Officer David Lim, who told Sirius that he will be back to get him after leaving Sirius' kennel in the basement of Tower Two to help other officers. Unfortunitally, Officer Lim never made it back to retrieve Sirius. He was stuck in the falling debries of Tower One and was pulled out by rescue crews about five hours later.

On January 22, 2002, Sirius' body was recovered and Officer Lim rushed to the scene to help. Sirius received full Police Honors and his remains were cremated.

His badge number was 17 and he was born in January 1997.

A new beginning for Ofc Lim-

He has a new K-9 partner, a black lab named Sprig. They are currently assigned to the Holland and Lincoln tunnels. Sprig is also an Explosive Detection dog.

    RIP Sirius

There is a great book (whose name is escaping me at the moment) about the K9s of 9/11. (does anyone know the title?)

      RIP Sirius

Painting of Sirius and photos of the painting being presented to his handler by the artist Deb Stonemaker. Deb owns a littermate to the black in my aviator.

                  How sad it that?

Rest in Peace Sirius. He would have came back to get you if he could.

I don't know if anything has changed over the years but in 2002 Sirius's name could not be read listing him as among those who lost their lives on 9/11 at the world trade center because "he was just a dog" . That is what inspired Deb to do the painting. There was a petition with thousands of signatures, but it was a futile effort. Many of those signing worked the site with their SAR dogs.

Not going to go into too much depth on a public forum but the truth is that there was an high ranking officer ( not Offcer Lim ) who was in the same room as Sirius. When the **** hit the fan, that person decided to run out of there and left Sirius to try to itself which is kind of hard when you're lock in a kennel.
