  • Two arrested in South Carolina deputy's shooting death

WALTERBORO, SC (AP) - Two men have been arrested in the shooting death of a South Carolina sheriff's deputy last month.

The State Law Enforcement Division issued a statement Monday that 18-year-old Jacoby Fields of Walterboro and 19-year-old Travis Harris of Smoaks are charged with murder and first-degree burglary.

Colleton County Deputy Dennis Compton was shot to death August 6 when he responded to a burglary alarm at a house near Smoaks.

The statement did not say when the men were arrested. The arrest warrant was dated September 5. SLED was to brief reporters on the case at 12:30pm Monday.

SLED says investigators exhausted more than 300 leads and examined 200 pieces of evidence.
