I'm new. My name is Sarah Goodwin. I have been a police officer for 4+ years now. I really love my job. I work for a pretty small department in a really tiny city outside of New Orleans, LA called Westwego. If you blink while driving past, you'll miss it. I work as a school resource officer. I love interacting with the kids. I'm not exactly officer friendly. My kids know what is expected of them, but I have some excellent relationships with my kids and their families. I just wanted to say hello.

Welcome, this is a great site with lots of interaction. Any hints for dealing with kids that we could learn from you?

Well, on the street it is hard to learn names, but in the schools, I learned names quickly. It makes things more personal, and that means a whole lot to kids and to their parents. In school, I make a bunch of classroom visits each day, I attend their christmas and easter parties in the classrooms(they LOVE to bring you gifts), and I began a mentoring program with 20 selected students who displayed leadership qualities, but were misguided. We met during lunch and I frequently checked up on them and rewarded them/disciplined them whenever it was due.

As a patrol officer, I made passes and made certain I stopped and chatted with the kids and made sure I gave them my full attention. It feels good to have a kids yell "Hey Officer Goodwin!" when I am driving around in my own little world, or when they see you in the store and say, "Mom, thats Officer Goodwin."

Not to bring out the typical cliche', but I really feel that those type of things make a difference.
