Hi everyone,

I should begin by stating that I am not a police officer, I am a social worker. However I became interested in law enforcement and decided to take some classes to see if it would be a career choice for me. The answer to that is no. I am however interested in forensic psychology which would work closely with law enforcement and the justice system or in the prisons. Every three months I do have contact with our law enforcement when they attend CIT (crisis intervention training) which help law enforcement officers learn about mental health and how they can better work and help our client population in crisis situations. Plus doing the scenarios is always fun. I look forward to learning much from you all.

My former partner's daughter finished college, became a social worker, and he
was always complaining about her choice of occupations. I've had to deal with
many paranoid schizo's; sociopaths, and other mentally unbalanced folks duing
my 27 year federal law enforcement career. Hope you become adept at not
being "conned" by some of your cases; some are very skillful at that. Good

Thank you for your good wishes. I appreciate them. I work in the children’s side; I get to see the little kiddos, 0-5. So the question becomes...why did I join this forum? Here's the much anticipated answer.
I became interested in law enforcement and thought about maybe becoming an officer, actually more like a deputy. I took some classes on administration of justice and decided nope, LE is not for me at least not as a patrol officer. I enjoy psychology so I am pursuing a degree in criminology and eventually a doctorate in forensic psychology.
In our county we have a training called CIT (crisis intervention training) we just had it this past week for LE in out tri-countyarea. Behavioral Health coordinates it to help officers/deputies understand how to deescalate situations that involve the population we serve. What we try to instill in the training is that time is on the LE side. Keeping a calm voice, good eye contact and listening can really help a situation where you have to 5150 go much smoother for both you and the person involved.
So to conclude I am glad I became a social worker before going into some branch of LE. It comes in handy to understand people on a different level.
