  • Two California Police Officers Jailed in Mexico

SOLEDAD, Calif. -- A Soledad police officer and a Monterey police officer were arrested Friday while trying to smuggle firearms into Mexico, police said.

Police said Mexican police arrested Monterey Sgt. Jorge Matos and the Soledad officer as they tried to enter Mexico with several firearms and ammunition. Matos is a former employee of the Soledad Police Department.

Inspectors said they recovered 5,000 rounds of ammunition, tactical training equipment and two laptop computers.

Soledad Police Chief Richard Cox said officials from the Department of Homeland Security notified his office of the arrest on Friday.

Cox said an internal audit of the Soledad Police Department armory did not show any weapons missing. The Presidio of Monterey's police department also said it had no weapons unaccounted for.

Matos was fired during his probationary period after three AR-15 rifles disappeared from his home and could not be found.

The identity of the Soledad police officer was not released.

The two men will spend a minimum of 60 to 90 days in a Mexican prison before being brought before a judge.

If convicted, they could face a minimum of 15 years in a Mexican prison.

I can hear the key snippet of conversation that went on during the planning sessions, now...

"Hey, don't worry, we'll just show 'em our police ID's and everything will go fine!"
"You're never fully dressed without a smile."

Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.

Three things I know for sure: (1) No bad deed goes unrewarded, (2) No good deed goes unpunished, and (3) It is entirely possible to push the most devoted, loyal and caring person beyond the point where they no longer give a 5h!t.

It will be interesting to see if any of the weapons that they had turn out to be the so called "lost" weapons. The real story, as told by Matos, is that as a probationary police officer, he was a member of the depts tactical team. Matos took the weapons home for "safe keeping" in his POV after training one day because he was too tired to return them to the PD. As luck would have it his POV was broken into and the weapons were part of the take. During the investigation search warrants were served on several properties associated with Matos throughout California with no weapons recovered. Shortly after, one weapon was recovered in the hands of a central coast gang member. As far as I know, this is the first time that Soledad PD has made it public that it "lost" three high powered rifles.

After this incident Matos went on to be hired by two other agencies in Monterey County, one of which was the agency that he was working for at the time of the arrest. I am not surprised to hear of this arrest, and will not be surprised if the SPD weapons have been recovered in the deal. Hope the idiot enjoys his time in Mexico.

Every California cop know better than to CCW into Mexico. Heck, don't even hide it in your trunk. If the Mexican authorities even suspect you to be a cop, they will search you big time.

Me thinks these two were up to no good!

Makes you wonder about the qualifications of the other applicants he was up against
I am sure he will walk out of that Mexican jail as a new man……………a WOMAN

I won't let anybody from my family to go to Marxico anyways. Kidnappings? Crooked Federalies? Running gun battles? I've even known guys who have accidentally missed the last turn going to the range near CDC Donovan in a black & white unit in uniform and been detained by senior federale.

Rule of thumb: If you get too close to the border, flip your Code 3's on and break every rule you need to in the CVC so as not to cross the chalk on the road.

Not that I condone breaking the CVC.

Since the weapons were likely going to drug runners and gang bangers, and would likely end up being used against American law enforcement personnel, if we ever get these two back, they should be tried for treason and summarily executed.
