Deputies shoot, kill suspected hostage taker

Eyewitnesses say man was upset his stuff was sold while in jail

09:47 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 30, 2008

HOUSTON -- Harris County deputies shot and killed a man they said was holding a woman hostage after he walked into a mobile home park threatening people on Wednesday.

The shooting occurred around 3 p.m. at a trailer park in the 1400 block of Aldine Mail Road in northeast Harris County. Deputies said they got a call from the owner of the mobile home park claiming that a man with two guns threatened him.

When they got to the mobile home park, they found the suspect inside one of the mobile homes sitting at a table and pointing a gun at a woman.

“She was yelling (that) she was being held against her will. She was very distraught,” said Lt. John Legg of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

When deputies entered the home, they said the suspect turned on them. That's when two of the deputies opened fire and killed the man.

“When they came through the front door he spun and pointed (a gun) at them. They did have time to say who they were,” said Legg. “He was determined. He already had his mind set.”

The shooting put many in the trailer park on edge.

“All I heard was three shots and one of the cops came out with a rifle,” said eyewitness Bobby Medina.

Investigators aren't sure what prompted the incident, but friends of the suspect said he had just gotten out of jail and was mad at his former landlord.

“They sold all of his stuff when he was in jail, and he was going to get even,” said Medina.

Investigators did not release the names of the suspect nor the two deputies involved in the shooting. They did tell 11 News that there was a history of arguments between the owner of the trailer home and the suspect.
