  • Is smoking more prevalent among cops/LE?

I heard that smoking is a bit more prevalent in law enforcement than the general population maybe due to the stressful situations you sometimes face? Is that true and approx. what percentage of cops smoke?

I am a non-traditional smoker which means I only smoke a few times a week and only 1 or 2 cigs a day so it takes about a MONTH to finish a pack! LOL!

If any of you cops smoke what kind you smoke? I smoke Marlboro 100s and Kamel originals or classics or whatever that red pack is. LOL!

At the time I quit in February, there were only a handful of us in the department that smoked.

No. But God knows we have our vices.

Most people who smoke on occasion end up smoking full time in the future. I can't count on both feet and hands how many I have seen go down that same road.

Most LE professionals that I know who use tobacco chew it. In any case more and more agencies are requiring new hires to have been tobacco free for six months prior to hire and sign a contract agreeing to remain tobacco free during employment.

I see more officers with a dip in than I do smoking. I do not smoke.

Of the 11 of us on nights, 5 chew. I'm not one of them.

              Cigarette Smoking

I think the answer to this is going to depend on what area you are talking about. I work for a Minnesota agency and very few of our sworn staff smoke cigarettes. (Yes, we do have a few "closet smokers".) The agency I formerly worked for had also gone to a contract to remain smoke few, on duty or off, during you entire time with the agency. Our jailers, on the other hand, are civilian and a much higher percentage of them smoke cigarettes.

Other than corrections, my S.O. has about 100 sworn. I only know of about 5 or 6 that smoke. There are a lot that go smokeless though.

I quit after my 20-year military career, before I went FT with the S.O.

Harris county has a non smoking in uniform policy, and most don't /closet smoke.

Nurses are far more bigger smokers then cops.

Alcohol is a much bigger vice with cops, and they have higher rates of alcoholism in the ranks .

Isn't that weird when you see a nurse or doctor smoking? Kind of like a cop breaking a law or something.

Lots of guys dip in my department (we are in the south), but there are even fewer smokers. No policy though. Just the way it is.

Our county doesn't allow smoking when in uniform (either on or off duty), so there aren't *that* many who smoke. Some who used to have quit. We do have a good number of dippers.

Not very many of us smoke on our force.

That chewing is definitely something not everyone can do. I remember some friends tried it and so did I and we all ending up vomiting!! The taste of it does something to you to make you awfully sick! How do you guys tolerate it and I wonder what percentage of people can tolerate it?

To the officer who said people who smoke only a few end up smoking full time, that may be true for some but definitely not all. I've been an infrequent smoker for 6 years and I've never smoked more than 1 to 2 cigarettes a day and never every day. It's always taken me almost a month or more to finish just ONE pack.

Plus I've also gone months without it. Not everyone finds it addictive.

There are about 45 deputies assigned to my station, only 2 smoke.

In my previous two law enforcement jobs I worked with several smokers. Very few officers do in the agency I'm with now. There are lots of dippers too. I've dipped a few times in my life, but I've actually never smoked nor wanted to.
