The Internet is full of those depressed houswives and bi-polar types. They are the ones who take things way too personally. They tend to be too invested because they have too much time and not enough to do. Just so you know how to spot em.

I personally have never met anyone through the internet. I've got too much going on in my life to spend any more time online than I already do here at O.com.
People I know are a different story, with mixed results.
One guy's wife left him because she "fell out of love" with him. He found out later she was carrying on an internet romance and decided to chuck it all for online love. The guy dropped her as soon as they met. She now has problems paying her bills and doing anything with her kids because she spends so much time online.
In a knee-jerk reaction to her dumping him, my friend turned to the internet to set up some 'dates.' You know, the kind where both parties agree to meet, have a quickie and go their separate ways. As a result of this, he met his NEW true love. His divorce was final 2 weeks ago and he's already moved in with her.
Exhibit C is a co-worker who just finished the nastiest divorce I've ever seen. Midway through the almost year-long process, he met a woman online that lives halfway across the country. They meet once a month in the middle, and now she's planning on moving out here to live with him.Caution and worry never accomplished anything.

Back in the "glory days" of the internet and BBS's (circa 1994) I met quite a few people from area bulletin boards, and even a few people from newsgroups. A handful turned out to be raving lunatics (including one I dated for a while, sadly), but most were pretty cool people. Haven't talked to any of them in, oh, three or four years. I'm too antisocial to have anything resembling a friend...
It's depressing enough meeting customers in my businesses; I don't really need to go out of my way to meet more dysfunctional people.Sarcasm: Just another valuable service I provide.

I've never met anyone online, myself, but I officiated at the marriage of a couple who met online. And it seems to be working out well for them, I'm glad to say. But they were VERY CAUTIOUS (and wisely so) when it came to actually meeting.
As they pointed out while we were doing the pre-marital counseling, by meeting online they were constantly sharing thoughts-- everything had to be put into writing, of course. If you actually met someone and went to a movie together, say, you might not actually say as much as you might say in writing.
But these are two honest, psychologically healthy people. Bet you can meet some lulus online! We do not all come to religion over the wandering years,
but sooner or later we all get to meet God. -- Edward Conlon
