  • Inmate involved in prison escape attempts suicide

One of the two Texas inmates who briefly escaped from a prison work detail this week in Huntsville attempted suicide today, officials said.

Jerry Duane Martin, 37, tried to hang himself at about 5:25 a.m. using boxer shorts he attached to a light fixture in his Estelle Unit cell, according to Michelle Lyons, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

She said Martin was quickly discovered by officers who had been checking on him frequently, and transported to Huntsville Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Martin and convicted killer John Ray Falk, 40, ambushed a horseback correctional officer on Monday while working in a vegetable field next to the Wynne Unit.

Another mounted officer, 59-year-old Susan Canfield, chased the men to a nearby parking lot at a Huntsville municipal building and fatally fell from her horse after the convicts stole a truck and hit the horse, which later died.

Within four hours, the two were apprehended. They likely face escape charges and could be eligible for capital murder indictments under state law.

(the one that attempted is the one pic'ed in the other thread)
Looks like we need to work on those "attempted" goals.

I hope they have good security sitting on him because it's just another ploy to get out of TDC and get another shot at freedom as far as I'm concerned. He was man enough to kill the CO he should be man enough to take his next punishment...he wasn't gettin out to begin with...put his butt in Full Suicide Prevention so he can't kill himself but can sit around naked for the rest of his days.
