Baton Rouge Police say a teenager escaped from Jetson Correctional Center for Youth carjacked a woman on Florida Boulevard Wednesday afternoon. Shortly after the alleged carjacking an officer began chasing the suspect.

Police report that during the chase, the suspect was unable to make a turn near the intersection of North Foster Drive and Jackson Avenue and crashed into Chenevert Hardware Store.

The car and the building caught on fire as a result of the accident. It was not immediately known whether the suspect survived the accident, and whether he was still in the car or in the building.

After about an hour, the police located the suspect inside the store and escorted him out. Witnesses on the scene say it appeared he only suffered minor injuries in the accident, as he was seen walking under his own power with slight a limp.

The suspect, who has not been identified, is expected to evaluated by a hospital, then held in custody overnight.
