  • What hours do you work at your department?

I know it varies from department to department but I was wondering how often do police officers work? IS it a 9-5 5 days a week job?

I know an officer in NC that works 2 days a week and every other weekend, 12 hour shifts.

    So what are yours like?

Five 8's. Every two months we alternate between days, nights and relief.

I work either 0600-1800 or 1800-0600. We have fixed shifts, but I'm in FTO so mine changes every few weeks. 12 hour shifts, every weekend is either a 3 day weekend on, or a 3 day weekend off. work 2 days during the week.

Do you work for OPD? That is their rotation also, if not.

No I don't, but pretty much every department in Central Florida works that shift. (Maybe a few differences in hours, like OCSO also has a 2pm-2am shift, and some departments start a little earlier or later than 6)

Same thing here and some of us at my department ABSOLUTELY HATE THIS SCHEDULE. I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate 12 hour shifts. Give me 5 8's or 4 10's any day of the week.

I absolutely love it. I'm worthless on my work days, but I don't want to do anything when I get home if I'm working an 8 hour day either... so I'll take more days off any time.

Four on, four off 12 hour shifts. I work the 1800-0600 watch. Personally, I love the 12 hour shifts.

Ours is the same as the NC officer you mentioned.

12 hour shifts. 56 hours one week (5 shifts), 24 the next (two), 56, 24, on and on. So I get every other Fri, Sat, Sun off. I personally love it. On the weekends I work one of the shifts is an 8 hour also.

I really haven't heard anyone in my department say they hate this setup. I would hate going to a shorter shift. I love having 7 days off in a 2 week period. On my short week I have plenty of time to run errands, take care of the house, work off-duty stuff, or just relax.

I would absolutely despise working 8 hours and then only having off 2 days a week. Bleh.

We have a weird schedule, working 9 hour shifts. Two days off one week, then three days off the next week....

Not that bad, but 4 10's would still be better.
