    The "Minor in Possession" Thread

I would especially not do so if I intended to question the actions of police officers, and suggest that they were "contributing to minors". MADD tries to have a good relationship with law enforcement and does not need rogue members going around acting as you are. I'm offended and digusted, and I've complained to O.com about your use of MADD in your screen name.

I saw that post too, at least they weren't drinking and driving.

My thoughts on that... MIP illegal, yes
do I care if minors 18-20 want to drink safely, no

Anyway, people should not judge a whole organization by a single person but people tend to do silly things

      True.

Now she's telling a female officer to change her tampon. I can see that my disgust was well placed.

I just hope people remember that Report Bad Post button at the bottom.

I don't agree with your opinion, but I respect its straightforwardness in terms of wrongness.

I believe we pretty well answered the lady's questions on her original thread. Don't think she really liked the replies, but believe she's gone. At least for now.

All due respect Entre, MADD has become just another temperance organization in the vein of Carrie Nation...

I recently saw a billboard posted by MADD advocating raising the drinking age to 25 ....Drinking age laws are about as unenforceable as they get now, imagine what that a nightmare that would be.

That leads me to a legal question: if MADD succeeded in getting the drinking age raised to 25, I would bet dollars to donuts that it would get thrown out of court the next day over 14th Amendment issues....If that's the case, then what makes 21 such a magic number?

Good point. However, age, unlike race and gender, is not a protected class under the 14th amendment. The 14th amendment calls for equal protection under the law but the court only applies the "strict scrutiny" test to certain classes, particularly race. With other classes they only apply the " rational basis" test and great deference is afforded to the legislature. While 21 passes the test I'd have a hard time believing that 25 would.

I respect your feeling on that, equinox. I'm guess I'm more taking issue with people using the names of organizations in their screen names. That really rubbed me the wrong way.

I understand your question about what makes 21 a magic number. When the drinking age was 18, at least it coincided with the age of majority. Age 25 makes sense too, because they say the human brain doesn't fully mature until then. But I too have always wondered what makes the age of 21 so special, other than tradition. Yet, as you say, making people wait until 25 does seem unenforceable.

People continue to develop and mature (most at least) into their 20's but if they raise the drinking age to 25 because because of that, do they raise the voting age, age to join the armed forces, age to be tried as adults? And should they raise the age of tobacco too then, or what about the age required to responsibly drive a 3500lb vehicle? It's kind of like saying your an adult but you have a 3 year probation period before we give you full adult privileges
