ORLANDO, Fla. -- Two Orange County sheriff's deputies were shot today, one in the arm and another in his bulletproof vest, near the tourist-filled International Drive area when they interrupted an apparent car burglary.
Investigators said two sheriff's deputies were shot and injured at the Caribe Royale Resort at 8101 World Center Drive this morning when they confronted three men apparently trying to break-in to a car.
"We do believe they came upon a car burglary in progress and shots were fired and that is when the two deputies were shot," Local 6's Mike DeForest said. "One (deputy was shot) in the arm and one in the bulletproof vest. Thank goodness for those bulletproof vests. It was able to spare his life."
Two men were immediately taken into custody. Officers searched a large area behind the Caribe Royale Resort near I-Drive and found the third suspect, police said.
Local 6 showed video of officers searching through a wooded area behind the resort.
The officer shot in the arm was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The officer shot in the bullet-proof vest was not seriously injured.
World Center Drive was closed between State Road 535 and International Drive. Traffic on Interstate 4 was backed up for miles during the search.
The Caribe Royal Hotel was scheduled to host a state council to study socio-economic conditions in the black community, including poverty, violence and drug abuse.
Starting Thursday, both Florida and Georgia attorneys general were scheduled to be at the hotel for a weekend conference on preventing black crime.
