Department of Defense Police Questions

Hoping some folks with DOD experience or knowledge can chime in........

1. What exactly is the difference between DOD police officers and DLA police officers?

2. Are there 0083 series police assignments overseas, or are they all state side?

3. how easy is it to transfer an 0083 police job between agencies (ie: Navy to Air Force to DLA, etc)?

1. Never worked for DLA, but I'd imagine its very similar. "Force Protection."

3. It depends on where you want to go. If you apply as an applicant from one agency to another, it could be easier. You'll be applying as a federal employee with the same grade and experience. If you try to transfer from the same agency, just to a different location, it could be more difficult.

1. DLA falls under DOD so technically they are all "DOD Police Officers". If you are asking the difference between DLA and Military Dept POs, that answer is....it depends on the Service and Base. DLA you will have a civilian leadership structure. The Military services vary greatly between services and bases. Some are almost completely military, some are almost all civilian. Some perform lots of traditional police work, some are almost all FP.

2. The only openings Ive seen for 0083s are with the Army in Germany.

3. Ease of transferring is relative. You will need to apply and go through the hiring process like everyone else. However, being a current fed employee with a current DOD clearance "might" speed things up a bit. You may or may not need to attend the academy again, depending on where your original academy was and who you want to transfer to. Your best bet to avoid future academies within 0083 is to get on with an agency that sends their new hires to UPTP at FLETC Glynco. It also gives you the most options to move outside of DOD to other civilian uniformed fed agencies like USSS UD, FPS, Supreme Court Police, etc.
