PHOENIX -- A veteran Department of Public Safety officer is facing possible criminal charges following an early morning wreck in Phoenix that shut down part of Interstate-17 for nearly six hours.
The officer, 50-year-old George Aguilera, was off-duty and driving in his own Ford Mustang at the time of the three-vehicle accident, which occurred about 1:30 a.m. on southbound Interstate 17 near Glendale Avenue, DPS officers said.
DPS spokesman Sergeant Harold Sanders said Aguilera's car rear-ended a motorcycle, knocking the man off the cycle.
The victim, 26-year-old Phoenix resident Mark Streech, was then run over by an 18-wheeler, officers said.
Streech was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
Sanders said investigators are looking at charging Aguilera, who's been with DPS 27 years, with aggravated assault.
Investigators also are looking into whether there was any impairment.
Neither Aguilera nor the truck driver was hurt.
All southbound lanes reopened around 7:15 a.m.
